Closet Christians | Back to articles | Articles sitemap |

It’s time to come out of the closet! Do I have your attention now? Today I want to discuss “closet Christians” and how now’s the time to get out of the closet, and into the world! Today there are far too many closet Christians. What is a closet Christian? The definition of a closet Christian is plain and simple; it’s a believer in hiding!

What and who do they hide from? Closet Christians simply hide from the non-Christian world. While in a church atmosphere or talking to other Christians they find themselves in their “comfort zone” making it easy for them to profess their love for Christ and worship the Lord. However as soon as they leave that church and go into the outside world, they rarely fly the Christian banner.

Many “closet Christians” even try to avoid religious conversations with others as much as possible. This must change! As Christians we should be taking every opportunity (as guided by the Holy Spirit) to witness to others and share the good news of the cross! We shouldn’t be running away and cowering in fear. Fear of “what to say and how to say it” or “what others will think” or “not offending anyone” is from Satan. Cast down and bind the devil in the name of Jesus! Fear is not from God, remember that. “…God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

If you are a Christian remember you have an omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), omnibeneficient (all-loving) God watching you and backing you up! There is no reason to fear! God is on our side, He loves us and He definitely won’t abandon those spreading and sharing His Word. We’re not just a bunch of weak, helpless Christians, “we are more than conquerors through him (Jesus) that loved us.” (Romans 8:38)

Right now, today, it’s time to get out of your personal comfort zone, and let the world know that Jesus Christ is the Lord of your life, He is risen, He is King, He is coming soon, you love Him with all your heart and you’re not afraid or ashamed to show it! You fight your flesh and declare to yourself: “I’m not ashamed of Jesus, I love Him and I’m not afraid to say it or show it!”

Now I understand that stepping out into the world can be difficult for someone who has just come to Christ. If you have just come to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior then taking small steps is fine. Just make sure that you do eventually take a step out in faith. This message is for the long-time or knowledgeable Christians who know what’s going on, and know that they shouldn’t be in hiding any longer.

You will find that many closet Christians were once dedicated Christians, but due to back sliding, fear, or lack of faith are now in need again to be re-taught: “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” (Hebrews 5:12-14)

Some Christians today have this funny idea that if they just wait around and let this world continue to degenerate (and it is getting worse) it will somehow quicken the rapture. This idea is just another lousy attempt of Satan to try and work laziness into the lives of believers. Know that laziness in practicing the Word will weaken a believer. Our physical muscles will shrink if we stop exercising them and in the same manner so will our spiritual muscles.

First of all, if we become lazy and sit around waiting for the rapture to happen we are going to go through a lot more trouble, a lot more pain, and a lot more suffering in this world. Even more so, we will be held accountable by God for our laziness at judgment. Waiting around for the world to destroy itself, trying to quicken the rapture isn’t going to make Jesus come sooner. Jesus is going to come when the body of Christ (the church) is in its fullness! When the church has reached its peak! Sure we might know how the story ends, but there is still much to do. Now don’t be discouraged, the time of fullness is indeed upon up! We are soon to be operating in the fullness of God!

It’s true God’s Word will prevail no matter what we do, however, if we choose to stay lazy, if we choose to stay in the closet, we’re just going to make the time that’s left a whole lot worse for ourselves.

Could you imagine if everyone that claimed to be a Christian actually practiced what they claimed to believe? Jesus would probably have been here for the rapture and back in heaven by now!

Remember the great commission of Jesus? “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15) “Ye” means “YOU”! This was a command of Jesus everyone! This is no less of a commandment then any other He gave. He said “YOU, go into the world, and preach the gospel.” That doesn’t mean become a minister, but it means wherever you work for example, that’s your little share of the planet. That’s where you’re supposed to be spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. So what are we waiting for? Let’s get to it Halleluiah!

If you truly love Jesus, then don’t be ashamed of Him. Being ashamed of Jesus is denying Jesus. Jesus has something to say about those who deny Him here on earth; here are a few very important scriptures:

But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:33)

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21)

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46)

When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are” (Luke 13:25)

Now that is some heavy stuff! If we deny Christ before the very people we interact with in our lives each day, if we disobey His instruction, He will deny us before the Father! Well I guess that settles that doesn’t it? Let’s not deny Christ, but instead proclaim, announce, and declare that Jesus is Lord from the top to the bottom and the sides of this earth!

I pray in the name of Jesus that right now many “closet Christians” will come out of the closet. If I can encourage you to do one thing this week it is this: tell one person about Jesus Christ. I don’t mean just tell them about Jesus, but ask them if they know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Pray that God opens a doorway for you to witness. Ask God to prepare someone’s heart to receive the Word. Maybe the Lord has recently been speaking to you about witnessing to someone. Maybe you will share the message of Salvation with a complete stranger! Either way there is still a mighty job for us to do in this world. Just think of how many people may be translated into the kingdom of God this week! It’s exciting! Let’s stand up for Christ together and get this world saved!
