Confronting homosexuality in today's world | Back to articles | Articles sitemap |

Today I want to discuss one of the most controversial issues of our modern world: homosexuality. First however let me say that it is my goal, as always with each article, to reveal the truth about whatever I am led to write about. I judge all things according to the Bible; the book which I believe and trust as the infallible Word of the living God.

Therefore understand this: if I judge by the Bible I simply agree with its creator. Consequently it is not me who judges but God’s Word, and therefore God Himself. This is not to say however that I do not fully agree with Scripture. It is not man’s place to judge, the Lord is the only one worthy of that seat; however we have been left with the task of proclaiming the truth the nations of this world so that they may escape destruction. Therefore again today let the truth be proclaimed, and let each one of us be corrected by God’s Word, so that we may in fact escape destruction of both body and soul.

As Christians we must remember that when we’re presenting an argument either for or against something, we must do more then simply pick a single Scripture out of the Bible to use as proof for our confidence. Many Christians and non-Christians alike quote Scripture out of context when trying to prove their point. When attempting to find what the Bible is saying about an issue, we must look throughout the entire Bible to understand what God is truly trying to show us. Only by taking into account all Scripture can we form an accurate picture of what God is saying to us through His Word.

Homosexuality is not something new to this world. It has been practiced for thousands of years. Based upon Scripture as a whole however, which I will present, the Bible overwhelmingly opposes homosexuality.

Let’s first look to 1 Corinthians 6:9, 10 (NKJV) for some light on this subject: “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” Here the Apostle Paul clearly states that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Also notice that immediately after the first sentence Paul warns us to not be deceived. From this we can understand that many will in fact be deceived on these very issues. Homosexuality is grouped with idolatry, adultery, thievery, etc. as an act of ungodliness or unrighteousness; an act that is contrary to everything that God stands for.

Homosexuality is sin because it violates God’s law. “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22) Anything contrary to God’s Word is sin. Now some will say that we are not under the “law” of the Old Testament any longer and that is true; the old covenant we had with God was replaced with the new covenant that we received through Jesus Christ.

Be careful that you are not deceived however. To say that we are no longer under the “law” does not mean that God no longer has any laws or regulations for His people. Christ Jesus is now our high priest, and we live according to the new covenant He established by His death and resurrection. This does not mean that all laws are new however.

Our new covenant comprises of relevant Old Testament laws combined with new, New Testament laws. Many of our old covenant laws overlie our new ones. To say we are no longer “under the law” does not mean that there are no longer moral and ethical guidelines by which we should live. Christ has ushered in the law of the Spirit (See Romans 8:2). We now live by the law of Christ, (See Galatians 6:2) our High Priest (See Hebrews 4:15). We now walk to fulfill the royal law (See James 2:8) and the law of liberty (See James 2:12), not the law of transgressors.

The Bible says that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines.” (Hebrews 13:8, 9 NKJV) Understand that God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one God (one God as to substance, but three persons as to individuality). The God of the New Testament is the God of the Old Testament. The God of the Old Testament clearly shows His objection to homosexuality: “If a man lies with a male, as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination:” (Leviticus 20:13 NKJV) Therefore it is completely safe to say that Jesus would hold the same view on homosexuality as God the Father. To say that Jesus is not opposed to homosexuality is to say that God is divided against Himself, and as Scripture says “… if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.” (Mark 3:24)

We may not always fully understand why God considers something unlawful; however as Christians we must recognize that we are never going to fully understand all the things of God in this life. Obedience must sometimes come before understanding. Simply put, trusting in God before you fully understand His methods and intentions is called faith.

Obedience to God’s Word is crucial whether we fully understand it all the time or not. Do we need to understand all the inner-workings of an automobile to drive it? Do we need to understand all the technicalities of a medical operation before we undergo the procedure? No, we do and use many things in this life without understand anything about them. If we can trust a doctor, how much more should we trust God? After all, our very life is in the hands of the Almighty.

Generally however, it is safe to say that God makes laws against many acts because they bring about destruction. God knows what practices will lead us to destruction and therefore declares them to be sin. God creates laws to protect mankind, just like we (mankind) make laws to protect ourselves from dangers.

Homosexuality robs both God and man of sons and daughters. It robs the individuals involved of one of the greatest joys in life; beautiful children birthed in their image. Homosexuality is a perversion of God’s intended relationship between a man and woman. Genesis records that “… God created man in His own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created He them.” (Genesis 1:27) God created a model for healthy, natural, harmonious relationships when He made Adam and Eve. He created a man first and a woman for a man. Jesus Himself elaborates on this point: “But from the beginning of creation, God ‘made them male and female.’ For this reason a man shall leave his father and a mother and be joined to his wife, ‘and the two shall become one flesh’; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” (Mark 10:6-9) Here Jesus not only identifies that a relationship between a man and a woman is God’s intended design, He also adds that the purpose of marriage is for one man and woman to complete each other.

A man completes a woman and a woman a man. A man cannot complete another man and neither can woman complete a woman; it is physically, emotionally and spiritually impossible. Men and women were made differently on purpose, and that clearly shows God’s intentions.

Homosexuality not only defies scripture but nature as well. “For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.” (Romans 1:26,27) Homosexuals cannot reproduce by natural means. A man’s body carries sperm and the woman’s the egg. Nature itself bears witness that it is only natural and harmonious for a man and a woman to come together in a sexual relationship. Within nature there is nothing without purpose. For a man to have sexual relations with another man or a woman with a woman is to defy nature itself.

In the Old Testament there is a story about two cities called Sodom and Gomorrah. “… the men of Sodom (and Gomorrah as well) were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.” (Genesis 13:13) The men of the city continually sinned against God in numerous ways. God had decided to destroy these two cities however two angels were sent to warn a man named Lot to take his family and flee the city.

Now before they lay down (the angels, disguised as men, were going to stay the night at Lot’s home), the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot and said to him, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them carnally(in other words, to rape the angels disguised as men). So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, and said, ‘Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! See now, I have two daughters who have not known man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof’.” (Genesis 19:4-8 NKJV)

In the end, Lot escaped the city with the help of the angels and “Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.” (Genesis 19:24, 25)

The inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah sinned in numerous ways. The New Testament book of Jude however, pinpoints the principal reason for the destruction of the two cities. "Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." (Jude 1:7) Therefore, it is evident that the foremost reason for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was the perversion of natural sexual relationships. Sodom, Gomorrah and the similar cities around them were left as warning signs for the ungodly. “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly;” (2 Peter 2:6) From this it is undeniable that God considers homosexuality unrighteous and sinful.

Homosexuality is a choice just like stealing, cheating, murder and rape is a choice. We are not born thieves, adulterers, murderers or child molesters, these are decisions we make in our lives. It is evident that certain individual are born with a predisposition towards these acts, however we must remember that all of mankind has been birthed into a fallen world; therefore there are individual sins that we all struggle with.

What I struggle with may not be the same thing that you struggle with. Satan attacks each person according to their areas of weakness. One person may struggle with drugs, the other with greed and another with homosexuality. All are sin however, and all are to be confessed as sin and left at the cross of Christ.

Personal testimonies from homosexuals indicate that most have experienced traumatic events in their life, especially during childhood. Homosexuality is sometimes the product of a painful past. Satan uses abuse, alcoholism, destroyed families, loneliness, molestation, rape and many other cruel and vicious tactics to form a foundation for homosexuality (and many other destructive lifestyles) to take root.

Many Christians are unaware that like depression, homosexuality is a spirit. Changes in mannerisms, body posture, and speech are all spiritual manifestations. What some see as someone “acting” gay is many times not acting at all. It is their spirit being influenced by a spirit of homosexuality. As it is with most demonic influence, the one being influenced is rarely aware that anything extraordinary is happening.

Now understand that homosexuality is no different from any other sin in the sense that it is to be confessed before God as sin and abandoned. Sadly, some Christians wrongly view homosexuals as a lost cause. Homosexuals are not a lost cause whatsoever; their souls are just as valuable to God as anyone else’s and they are worth winning to Jesus.

Specifically to the Christians, remember that we sow the seed, but God gives increase. As Christians we are to love homosexuals just as anyone else. Jesus died for homosexuals, murderers, adulterers, idolaters, thieves and all sinners; “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) We are not to attack homosexuals or maltreat them. The truth must be proclaimed yes, but always lovingly and accurately. We must show those who are engaged in homosexual relationships that though we disagree with the choice they have made, we still love them as people. We may hate the sin, but we do not hate them. God loves all people, and so must we.

You do not always have to constantly remind a sinner that they are a sinner. Certain people receive the Gospel in different ways; try simply letting them know that God loves them, cares for them and desires a relationship with them. Let them know what God wants to do for them and what Jesus has already done. Too much fault finding can lead to the opposite effect of your labor. Guided by the Holy Spirit, plant the seeds of God’s Word and love into their heart, pray for them fervently, and let God do the rest. God will begin a work in them, and He will provide a way to bring about the change that is needed in their life.

Remember we must examine our own hearts. Many of us look down upon homosexuals because their sin is external for everyone to see, but don’t let yourself be fooled; if you hold greed, envy, lust, adultery and murder in your heart where it is not seen, you are just as guilty before God, who sees all, as is the one who struggles with homosexuality.

I now warn all Church leaders: to ordain openly gay couples or recognize their relationships as natural, harmonious and scriptural, and thus approved by the church, is a great transgression against Almighty God. To condone and encourage such relationships in the body of Christ is to condone and encourage sin. Do not give Satan a foothold in your church. To those churches who sew these seeds of wickedness, remember your actions in time of your harvest, which you shall surly receive.

God has declared homosexuality to be sin. There is not a single passage in the Bible that portrays a homosexual relationship in a positive light. Therefore we must also recognize that the institution of marriage must also remain as it has for thousands of years. God established marriage, and what God has established let man not destroy.

If you are reading this right now, and you do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I want you to know that God truly loves you and desires a real relationship with you. He wants you to have a healthy, happy and successful life here on earth, and He wants you to spend eternity with Him in heaven. If you’re gay it’s no different. God does not love you less then anyone else, and anyone who claims so is either uneducated or a liar. God does expect us to obey His Word however, and homosexuality is one of many things contrary to what God declares as good. Homosexuality will keep you separated from God. I invite everyone to bring their burdens, cares and sins to the cross of Christ today; take them before the Lord and leave them there. God sees what we cannot see and He understands what we cannot understand. Put your trust in God today. I promise you, if you give Him your heart, He will not let you down.

May we all understand and accept the truth when the truth is presented, may we all be encouraged by God’s Word and if need be, corrected by it. Remember that “no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11)
